La canción del verano #26: 'Surf City'

Y, en efecto, sólo una pudo reinar, aunque no fue la que Wilson tenía en mente: publicadas con apenas un mes de diferencia, 'Surfin U.S.A' trepó hasta el número 3 de las listas estadounidenses, pero fue 'Surf City' la que hizo cima. El padre de Wilson montó en cólera por el talento desperdiciado y, tras escuchar la canción por la radio, el comercial de Capitol llamó confundido a la discográfica para preguntar que cómo era que nadie la había avisado de que los Beach Boys habían sacado un nuevo single.

Sólo que no eran los chicos de la playa, sino los aplicados y entusiastas Jan Berry y Dean Ormsby. Número uno y primer (y único) disco de oro para el dúo californiano, que completó la canción con una alineación estelar de músicos (Hal Blaine, Glen Campbell, Earl Palmer y Bill Pitman, entre otros) y un envidiable surtido de tópicos playeros. Camionetas Ford, tablas de surf atadas a la espalda, fiestas sin fin y «dos chicas por cada chico» como mantra vacacional.
