De una emoción similar a la de 'That Summer Feeling' pero de un lugar completamente diferente nace 'Summertime Sadness', vaporosa letanía con la que Lana del Rey, emblema del pop contemporáneo moldeado con materiales nobles del siglo pasado, hurga en la melancolía estival y en el vacío que queda tras el largo y cálido verano. «Kiss me hard before you go / Summertime sadness», se arranca la neoyorquina entre arabescos de sintetizador y una guitarra de terciopelo azul como recién desenterrada de la arena de Venice Beach. «I'm feelin' electric tonight / Cruisin' down the coast, goin' about 99», añade Elizabeth Woolridge Grant.
Deliberadamente retro y saturada de nostalgia en colores sepia, 'Summertime Sadness' estrenó el verano de 2012 (se publicó como single un 22 de junio, aunque 'Born To Die', el debut de la neoyorquina, ya llevaba en la calles unos cuantos meses) y ha tenido una inesperada segunda juventud este verano después de que Patti Smith, hechicera del punk ilustrado, se la haya apropiado en directo para evocar su juventud y su romance con Fred 'Sonic' Smith. También la de Chicago se siente eléctrica cada vez que la canta.
