A pesar de sus sempiternas chupas de cuero y su denominación de origen puramente neoyorquina, a los Ramones siempre les pirró la música surf, el ensalmo pop de los Beach Boys y el mito de California como kilómetro cero del frenesí estival. Los ... de Queens se tenían que conformar con Rockaway Beach, pero en cuanto podían cruzaban el país, aunque fuera mentalmente, para hincarle el diente a 'Surf City' de Jan & Dean o 'Surfin' Safari' de los Beach Boys.

En su segundo disco, 'Leave Home', tomaron la autopista Lincoln para traerse de vuelta 'California Sun', gozosa celebración de la eterna promesa de sol, playas y vida despreocupada que ya había pasado por las manos de los Crickets, Bobby Fuller, The Rivieras y Joe Jones.
La de los Ramones, sin embargo, es la versión definitiva: la que mejor consigue reflejar la exuberancia juvenil y el tam-tam de corazones desbocados con una atropellada mezcla de velocidad kamikaze y distorsión a chorro.
